Project RAG161 Building Construction: Wakaf Making

What is a Wakaf?

Definition
Literally Wakaf means to stop, contain or to preserve. In shariah, a Wakaf (plural: awqaf) is a sadaqah jariyyah (recurring / ongoing charity), a voluntary charitable endowment, from ones’ personal belongings or wealth in the form of cash / property for shariah compliant causes.

In my hometown, it is also known as a small rest house built in a Malay traditional way. It's simple, unique, beautiful and very suitable for bonding purpose.

For RAG161 Building Construction (one of the subject I have to take),
in a group of 5,
we have to make a Wakaf based on a real one.

So this is the Wakaf that my group have found at Sungai Ara Mosque.

It was very interesting because I never noticed how gorgeous the small structures can be
and how cool it is formed by different kinds of joints.

Our group managed to complete it within few days times.

So below is the end product...

Closed up to the joints.

It was quite costly because basically the columns and beams were made up of Balsa wood.
However, I have fun toying around with it as it is very easy to handle with.

The visual presentation:

That's all for now.
Bye~:)

PROJECT 5a & b: SENSE OF PLACE: NEIGHBOURHOOD & COMMUNITY

Before I start with the introduction,
I would like to express my gratitude towards my friends, lecturers and most importantly, Iconic Properties for helping, guiding and providing me with useful informations to kick start this project.
For both Project 5a & 5b,
each student need to choose one of these 6 neighbourhood areas from the list below:

1)       Bayan Residences, Relau, Penang
2)       Sunway Mutiara, Batu Maung, Penang
3)       Sunway Bukit Gambier, Penang
4)       Siara 81, Sg. Ara, Penang
5)       Sunway Merica, Sg. Ara, Penang
6)       Setia Greens, Sg. Ara, Penang

For me,I've chosen Siara 81.
After that,I've made a self-visit with some of my coursemates to the chosen area to observe and gather relevant information about the components or elements of the neighbourhood area. The results from the observation and the collected information then were analyzed and presented graphically in Project 5a and 5b.

Project 5a:
Top left:Key Plan; Bottom middle: Location Plan ; Bottom left: site analysis; Right: Site Plan.
So this is Siara 81 which strategically located at Changkat Sungai Ara 19 & 20.
(It's a newly developed are,so you will not be able to find it throguh Google Map nor The JUPAM).

It has 3 rows of terrace house (75 units) and 1 row of Semi-D (6 units)
It provides privacy and at the same time,
access to shopping complex, school, surau and etc.
Therefore
,the sound source is quite little except those from the nearby construction side.
The occupants will be able to receive maximum comfort as the houses are facing north/south.
Besides cool air will be flow from the secondary forest nearby to the houses.
The neighbourhood has facilities like Playground, other religion area, TNB, retention pond and BOMBA.

Project 5b:

These are the amendments I wish to be added into the neighbourhood:
Cyclist pathway, beautify the playground, food stalls, more greenery around the retention pond, street light at the back lane and last but not least,
change the location of the main entrance.

That's all for now.
See you soon!:)

PROJECT 4: PRESENTATION DRAWINGS

In this project,
we are required to produce two pieces of works based on project 3B:

This is the plan, left, rear and right of our L shape table.
Well, the top 3 are the perpestive view of the table and chair.Meawhile the bottom part is the axonometric drawing.

Objective:
  •    To introduce students with basic technical or presentation drawings as a medium of communication in built environment.
  •    To enhance students’ skills in communicating the ideas and presenting their design through a set of scaled 2D and 3D drawings.
  •    To improve students’ skills in rendering, colouring and composing graphical images.
Till then.

PROJECT 3b: OBJECTS CONNECTION: A ComforTABLE CHAIR

Frankly I am quite excited for this project as in group of 3, we are required to produce a structural model of a wooden L-shape seating object that combines a table and chair(s) (students are free to design and decide the form of each chair/sofa/table/desk)
Besides,it is a competition.
The lecturers will select the best to be produced in real life and be placed near our school pond-waterfall which is now under construction.
For aesthetic factors,
we should also consider the function of the furniture as an outdoor comfortable resting spot for HBP community.
The theme of that seating object is ‘UNITY’,
but each group is free to choose their specific concept that is relevant to the stipulated theme.

Objective:
§  To improve students’ ability in applying suitable elements and principles of design in producing a functional structure.
§  To expose the students to the challenges of designing a small structure that is a result of a connection or combination of two or more objects.
§  To improve students’ skills in developing and communicating the ideas through conceptual scale model making.
§  To enhance students’ ability in designing a creative form of object and space with the understanding of human physiology, ergonomic and comfort factors based on basic technical knowledge

For the base,we used foam board.
To beautify it,we used paper mache.Painted it in orange(Acrylic paint) to make it striking and modern looking.

 Ta-daa!End product!
The main reason we designed it this way is to make it comfortable.
We named it THE FLOW.
Why?
As you can see the whole thing is in one piece. There's no ending for the curve. This also reflects the Unity theme.
The curve will also minimize the danger, allows rain water to flow down from it and thus reduce the maintenance fee.
The middle section is the coffee table.
The back rest is placed near the table because we believe the elders will sit near the coffee table and this allows them to get the things on the table easily.

That's all.
Thank you!

PROJECT 3a: OBJECT CREATION : A FREE-FORM SCULPTURE

For this project, there will be no more drawing!
Instead we need to produce an object of a free-from sculpture that can be made from any materials (new or recycled)
Besides,
to create the sculpture,
we shall communicate with the inner self, our imagination and creation needs to co-work within the limited spaces and time set.
The theme of the sculpture is ‘HARMONY’,
but each student is free to choose their specific concept that is relevant to the stipulated theme.

Objectives:

  •      To improve students’ ability in applying suitable elements and principles of design in producing a free-form object.
  •       To improve students’ skills in developing and communicating the ideas through conceptual model making.
After 'communicated' with my inner voice and imagination, I realized time limitation is my big problem.
In order to express my feeling,I've decided to make a broken clock with butterflies flying out of it.
Broken clock-a wish to forget the times.
Butterflies(symbolized me ,also my logo signature in case you readers forgotten)-flying out from the broken clock          to set myself free from the tension caused by the time limitation.

To start creating the sculpture
,first and foremost,
I've used some old newspapers and glue (paper mache method) to do the clock.
To be exact, this is a home cooked starch (To save the cost)

Carefully, stick the newspapers pieces with starch onto the plastic container to form the shape of a clock.

The base is a plastic container,so it's easier to produce the shape.
I've torn apart an old real clock to decorate the inner part of my clock.
Then I've cut the shape of the butterflies from aluminium tins.
To make the butterflies 'flying' out from the clock,
I used aluminium wire.

I've used hot glue gun to stick the aluminium butterflies onto the wire.

Ta-daa!It looks like they;re flying gracefully on top of the clock.
The top view of the end product.
The end product.

The End.
Thank you!

Project 2 : NATURAL & MAN-MADE STRUCTURES

Hello!
Before I start my project 2, I need to tour myself around the campus with my DSLR camera.
It was quite exciting because I get to explore more compunds.
*Whisper: I'm very lazy to walk around during normal days.*

For this project, it is divided into 2 sections as well ;
Project 2a: Natural structure
Project 2b: Man-made structure

Through this project, we are able :
  • To enhance students’ understanding of  basic elements and principles of design through observation of existing natural and man-made structures.
  •  To enhance students’ creativity in presenting their ideas selectively and graphically.
  •  To nourish students’ skills in creative thinking, observation, sketching, rendering, colouring, writing description and composing graphical images.
Project 2a

B&W Image for the plant that I found in front of my dormitory.
The reason I choose this because I really fancy the beautiful structure on the leaf.
This kind of structure can also be applied on the buildings deign.
By this, I realize human often inspired by the structure of the plants to design things in life.
For example,
the Dynamic Tower by David Fisher which can produce energy by itself.
Just like leaf, it too can produce energy by itself through photosynthesis.
Just in case you can't see clearly ..

So this is the end product:
I have used tonel, scumble, hatching, cross-hatching and dots to produce this sketch.

Next,

Project 2b: Man-Made Structure:
I choose the sky bridge that connects my hostel compound with the main campus.
The reason I picked it to draw because I like the function of the bridge- to connect 2 different places together.
Besides, the rhythm of the structure is harmony.

 The B&W picture:
The end product:
Eq used : water color.

That's all for today.
Till then!
See you soon k ^^

Project 1

Hi there!
I am finally back.
Sorry for the late updates as I was quite occupied with the current assignments. :(

In the previous post,I've reviewed parts of my first project.
So here's the details about Project 1 - Me, Myself and I.

It's a project to describe ourself though the 2 topics given:
                                                                                         Project 1a: Stewardship
                                                                                         Project 1b: Personal Logo
The objective of the project is :

  •  To stimulate students’ appreciation of beauty and aesthetics through an observation of themselves as the best of all creations (‘sebaik-baik kejadian’).
  • To encourage students to rediscover their true selves and be able to represent themselves graphically using basic design elements like lines, shapes, forms and colours. To introduce students with basic sketching & drawing techniques, lettering, writing description and composing graphical images.
  • To introduce students with the importance and responsibilities of every actor in built environment

At the same time, we are able to practice SKETCHING, COLOURING, WRITING IN ARCHITECTURE FORM(description)(THIS IS THE HARDEST PART), GRAPHIC DESIGN.

Project 1a:

Process:

To create more even effect, I've use tissue to paper to scrub the surface of the pencil shading area.
To have a better and more detail lighting effect, use art eraser.
It can remove the pencil shading according to the size you want as the eraser is very soft,it forms whatever shape you like.
Fyi, mine's from Faber-Castell.

Why does architecture writing so hard?
Because the writing has to be uniform yet cartoon-alike.
Since my writing is so horrible, I've decided to kick-start with pencil before using the Ecco Pigment Pen.
This was really time consuming.

Then

TA-DAA!
End Product:

A closer look for my portrait...
This is my very first time sketching portrait with pencils.
I know it's not so good and I need more practice.><

 Project 2b: Personal Logo
Descriptions:

For this section, I choose butterfly as my personal logo because it symbolised mighty and great changes in life.
As everyone knows, before butterfly unfurl itself into glory,
it was hated by human for destroying the leaf of the plants.
Therefore,I want to apply the life phase of a butterfly onto my life.
You can also find my name initials on the wing of the butterfly.
Top left : M = Mandy
Bottom left: O = Oh
Top right: J =Jinyi
Middle : Y =YI

Process :

After drawing the outline of my logo, I used color pencil to color it.
I choose green to show my love for nature, a security for wealth and a hope to improve my poor eye sight.
Then I used tissue paper to make the color surface even.

End product :

Till then.
Bye!:)
